I don't think religion is helping this discussion one bit. There are people out there who need help, not inane ramblings and confusion.

I don't suffer from depression but have been close to several who have. It is a medical problem with several possible causes and partial solutions. There is no single "happy pill" but a number of medications that will take the edge off and let a person get back to functioning.

Everyone can get depressed. That is normal. You lose a loved one or a job or a pet and it's tough for a while. This type of depression is situational -- caused by something external. It tends to last several days or maybe a couple weeks, then it relents. Clinical depression is different. It is organic in nature -- not caused by events but by chemical issues in the brain. It drags on for months or years and leaves a person unable to hold a job, maintain relationships, of even care for themselves. If someone you love is suffering from clinical depression, get them help. Fast.

Thank you for a very accurate explanation of situational vs clinical depression. If you have ever told someone with clinical depression that they should not be depressed as they have so much to be thankful for, then you have no idea what they are going through. That is one of the worst things you can say to them.

If you are truly concerned just let them know you care and take the time to sit and talk with them. Mainly listen and try to better understand them and what they are going through. This can take awhile as it is not something easy to discuss.
