Day length can be a factor. I have to be aware of that myself. It's not a real big deal for me but I try to go outside and spend some time in the sun in the winter. A trip to lower latitudes really makes a difference for me.
I met a guy from Alaska once while in Hawaii. He said he had to make the trip to Hawaii for the sunlight in the middle of the winter to fight off depression. It was a matter of survival to him.
For others, I would say a chemical imbalance may be the leading issue and those suffering from it should not be embarrassed or ashamed to seek treatment.
