se wi | The paybacks....Erosion control, soil has to stay in the field. Better infiltration, can't grow a crop with water that runs off the field. Weed control, less marestail and waterhemp. Less compaction, living roots keep soil aggregated. White mold control, reduce spore splash in soybean flowers. Jump start biology, initiate fungi activity in spring. Transpire moisture in spring, drier soil is warmer soil. Cycle nutrients, biomass brings NPK etc to the soil surface to become more available. Allows planting in wetter conditions, living roots won't smear, less mud buildup on gauge wheels. Add carbon, vegetative stage grass pumps carbon into the soil. Bottom line here is that a guy has to put a value on what a ton of topsoil is worth....$40? I'm not smart enough to know, but I do know rye costs $8 an acre. | |
