Speaking of the area in China where it was first detected they did stop the spread with their lockdown and tracing and only had imported cases after they reopened.
Other places also managed to stop the spread with a tight lockdown and lots of testing and tracing.
Bermuda is another place I know has only had imported cases after they locked down when it was transmitted locally early on.
New Zealand eliminated Covid after a period of shut down

Other areas have not been able to stop it but have certainly slowed down the spread with actions and so have not swamped health care like happened in China where it was new and became a problem before people reacted to stop it.
I believe New York city was swamped with cases at one time but has now got control by slowing down infections although not stopping with lots of testing and tracing.

Stop would be much better than slowing but slowing is certainly better than letting it go full blown.
Sweden chose to do little except isolate elderly and they still have an ongoing infection rate at high levels.

Italy tried to stop it with a shutdown but because citizens did not trust or listen to government it ended up with one of the higher death rates also partly from the multigenerational homes there where young went out and brought it back to the elderly.

Japan and a few others Asian countries kept it under control but did not stop it. They were in the habit of wearing masks, bowing instead of shaking hands and have a passion for cleanliness and washing hands which helped as well as plans for a pandemic which kicked into action when Covid first appeared.

There are many different outcomes but stopping it did happen in places and slowing it down has helped to lower death rates in many places.

The real lesson learned here is people will believe anything if you make it look official. Even if they’re on the other side of the world they know exactly what happened everywhere and they will do wherever they’re told. Amazing.
