Subject: RE: Sheep

Sheep have done great things for me over the years with that said I’ve decrease numbers the last three years. I’m somewhat bearish on the long term market for operations that can’t direct ship. Also much of the industry is moving to smaller companies unfinished ethic lambs that change the revenue/production cost structure drastically.

There is no way 200 ewes makes some one a good living. Even at the top end of the profit per ewe range some one might clear a $100 and that is a super efficient operation. Around here a truck driver that is home every night can make 50k. Sheep gross well per head but struggle to make a competitive wage per hour unless you do it on a large scale.

Now if some wants say 400 or 500 ewes and is willing to invest in some equipment there is a lot to be done. Corn silage and a mixer wagon look like to be the biggest labor and cost/hd saver available. However that is going to be tough on only 200 ewes.
