north central iowa | I remember 93 for a number of reasons, all of them bad. My mother died of cancer and we had a terrible crop. Planted soybeans in July with a floater and tried to disk them in where we didn't get stuck. Made about 14bpa.
It rained about 60 inches during the growing season. I had one field [peat bed] that had an insurance appraisal of 1.6 bushel per acre. [corn]. I was one of the few who had insurance and I took 0-92 on some and disked up the corn if it was shorter than the 28L 26 tires on the old 4WD.
Got unemployment that year. Farmers were eligible because they "couldn't farm".
My dad got an SBA loan to help him keep going.
One good thing about it, I decided if I could survive that year, I could survive anything.
