Southeast Colorado
The problem comes when you look at the difference in timing of individual farmers and where they are at on the ladder. If you're just kind of new at this and farming smaller acres than does all technology pay its way? If you're a 500 acre farmer and the tech pays back $20/acre can you still really afford it? Don't know...........but having all of the row clutches and variable rate fertilizer stuff surely sets you back financially quite a bit. Sure it saved you 10 grand that year............but by the time it has paid for itself they have already upgraded all of the equipment and have phased your stuff out. Now if you have at least a couple thousand acres it's probably a no brainer. Even then I'm not completely into the hi tech stuff. We have some............but any breakdown of the stuff irritates the heck out of me because I'm at someone else's mercy. I also feel like I'm being led down a path of dependency.
