Here is a solution to the second problem that may or may not be acceptable to you because you won't be able to access the Vista partition from XP afterwards. I haven't tried this myself (I never use system restore points) but it may work for you. The first problem you mentioned is very easy to negotiate around and the fix is mentioned in the same paragraph as the problem.
