A grid seems a scientific representation of the field. That makes sense to me.
I don't really know what a 'zone' is, appears it is some arbitrary acres of land a person throws together into one lot for some arbitrary reason. It might be well thought out or it might be guessing from what you remember the last time you ran the combine over the field. It seems to be more guessing, less fact finding to me.
