I guess I don't buy your argument about being at the mercy of the grader. My experience - if I feed the type of cattle that have trouble grading (and those are the type I fed for many years), I expect to get some heiferettes and some dark cutters. If I fight the market and feed them too long, the blame can only be on me for making them overfat. If I put in 9 wts and I get some heavy carcasses, there is no one to blame but me. My experience is that, when a buyer comes out, he wants more than anything else to have me call him back when the next pen is ready. If he knows that I am the type that will try to sneak a few head on a load that will have problems (flat bid), he sure won't want to come back out the next time and bid my cattle live weighed off the truck - or even flat in the beef. I have to tell the truth - I don't understand all this bad-mouthing the packers.
I would agree with your last sentence - if - you had left out "by the packers." | |
