In 2007 there was a really big shift to corn acres......corn went up 15 myn acres from 2006 and soybean acres dropped 10.8 myn acres....
that tightened up the corn/bean price ratios and made soybeans the favored crop...well, at least for 2008
in '08, bean acres jumped 10 myn and corn acres dropped 9.4 myn
so, early on, you had some big year to year swings in corn vs. beans.....in recent years we have not seen the swings, just more total acres coming from hay, pasture, CRP, etc..
When it looked like prices weren't going back to 2 bucks soon it started to make sense to convert those acres to row crops. Also, if wx had been anywhere close to normal we might have planted 100 mil A of corn in 13. So you need to use that as your starting point. |
