Tamworth NSW Australia | We do use underground water but not for drinking. We use well or bore water for livestock, outside the house for gardens and trees and also have an outlet in the house to use for laundry if fresh water runs low (hasn't happened yet). The water is pumped out of the ground with a windmill and stored in an above ground tank. As Ham said some of the water supplied to the local towns is fairly awful with chlorine and hardness so I'm happy I "have" to drink rainwater.
