Subject: impact of fall N on the decomposition of corn stover

Hello folks,

broadcast applications of fall N (especially ammonium sulfate) are regularly recommended by some as a method of accelerating the decomposition of corn stover and recycling constitutive nutrients.

I haven't looked too hard yet but a short search hasn't turned up any scientific data supporting this view.

I have a few questions for all of who have experience with surface applications of fall N -

have you ever left control strips that did not receive fall N?

Have you specifically observed that AMS is superior to other fall N sources?

Is there value in applying the N after frosts are occurring regularly? how important are weather conditions after N application?

Do you use a set rate of fall N? If not, how do you determine rate?

How do you value/credit fall applications of surface N as part of your total N program?

I am thinking about having students conduct a pot study of the effect of added N on corn stover decomposition this semester (as an undergrad lab activity). Any thoughts on what variables we should compare?
