Mid Michigan
A simple answer to your post is that the 1/4 mile long pea picking convoy probably has a lot more significance than the 30 cars behind them put together. You like peas don't you? I would bet over 50% of the traffic that goes by here is recreation oriented. Going down the highway around here is getting pretty scary. People simply don't slow down. If traffic is moving 60 mph and you're on the shoulder they will skate around you without slowing down even if you have a few feet of combine or implement hanging over the white line. They will shoot over into the other lane and run those people off the road in the oncoming lane before they will slow down. I've seen it almost every time we go down the highway. Just about give me an ulcer thinking about getting on the highway anymore.
