Anything else: The insurance co is betting that they can collect more from me than they have to pay me. If I can stand the risk, I should get rewarded....."

Interesting points by RAB that you were responding too. I disagree that there is really a difference between health/liability insurance and crop insurance. Regardless of what risk (and how much) you choose to buy "insurance" for, you are reducing risk (at a cost). Whether I lose 80,000 dollars due to crop loss, house/building fire, or health issues, I'm still out $80,000. The question becomes what are my biggest "risks", and how will I address those risks.

I'm not disagreeing with you, just making a few points. Interesting thread......
