Leesburg, Ohio | Never had any 'til the '99 drought, and luckily we had signed up then for the first time ever. Before that, the only thing available in our county was multi-peril, which was no coverage at all. In four generations (since the '20s) we've always had at least a half a crop. Multi-peril never would have provided any payout. Since '99, we have had a few claims, once on weather, a couple on price, and a couple small ones on replant.
If I were close to debt-free, I would not use it.
GRIP is OK if you want to gamble on your neighbors having a bad yield, but it's not insurance.
I look at it the same way illinidirtfarmer does...I don't buy it hoping for a claim, but for the protection it provides in a bad year. | |
