Subject: RE: Heads up . . . .

David1187 - 11/30/2011 12:21 Hello, I am currently a part-time employee/farmhand and had some questions in reference to employee compensation. First off let me give some background information. I am currently receiving and hourly wage, and receiving a 1099 form at the end of the year. I have never had experience with this kind of tax return and was wondering if this was the same way that other farmers set up tax returns for employees? After doing research, I have found that typically a 1099 tax form is used for independent contractors and not employee's. I am not a contractor as I do not work for myself, nor do I use my own equipment/tools. Is there any way around my employer mailing me this 1099 and setting up a different tax system where I don't end up getting taken to the cleaners at the end of the year? Any replies will be much appreciated.

On a side note -
I haven't read any of the replys - but keep in mind, if your employer is treating you as an independant contractor - you are not covered for workers comp. If an accident happens while on his property/operating for him - you are on your own. Medical and worker disability . . .    you better have both.
Know of a case, where the workers didn't know they were independant contractors . . .  on guy got his leg in a grain auger . . . .  he had no medical insureance or worker comp / disability. He ended up loosing his foot and loosing everything else. He had to file bankruptcy . .. . .  Needless to say, he wasn't needed on that farm after that.
