Subject: RE: Getting into Hogs?

Ludington/Manistee MI area
I tried the small scale farrowing gig and gave up after 3-4 years. Looking back I see my errors. If you AIed and had the sows synced right to sell 4H pigs you would be fine. I would almost consider having mostly gilts farrow one liter and cull the majority and keep only a few leaders. Finish a few of the ones that will make poorer club pigs out of the spring liter and raise a few fall pigs for a majority of the freezer pork. Selling feeders to the public in the fall can be miserable.

I enjoy livestock on a small scale. Been buying 8-10 feeder pigs each spring and finishing them. 8 pigs and 7 cattle seems right for me. My heifers have the CIDRs in and looking forward to them being bred.

Town jobs can be a lower risk income but I can see why that doesn’t fit some. 35 years playing the corporate game has its frustrations.
