nw NC
I'm in the northwestern Piedmont area of North Carolina. Corn Goose says he is 3500' in NW NC. That puts him in the mountains of North Carolina. If anyone has never been in those counties of North Carolina you should go to Flash Earth http://www.flashearth.com/ and find northwest North Carolina. Look over the entire area taking a good look at how much of the land is forested, the shape of fields, the crooked roads. Then zoom in close and you can get a better feel for the roughness of the terrain . As he said " we are in a non traditional row\grain area. Mostly cattle, Christmas trees, tobacco, silage, pumpkins, cabbage, potatoes and hay." It isn't level with big fields , hence the " sod based rotation" with no-tillage to keep the soil on the hillsides. Like some land in my area, some of it should have never been cleared of forest. Much of that area's best use is for permanent grassland for grazing or hay. The two northernmost counties in that region are not large in area but according to NC Ag. statistics have over 38,000 head of cattle on farms.
