Subject: RE: Silage for beef cows - a convert

NC Indiana
89 lbs /hd/day =2247 cow days. You using Jim old calculator? ;-)

50 lbs/hd/day made for some 7 body condition score cows at calving the yr Dad was more worried about using up the silage than feeding them for their needs (our cows are babied anyway, but that yr was over board).

You don't like silage in a cow/calf operation, I can't see not using it in one so let leave it at that. Its just like TMR mixers, a $35 - 1350 lbs round bale of canary grass that the neighbor guys cows will jump the fence before they eat it mixed with 3000 lbs of silage makes for some great feed and cuts the waste on the hay to almost zero, but TMR mixers are not NAT approved in a cow/calf operation. Here vs there there I guess.

Have a good day and safe fall!

Edit - I do agree that I'd rather the cows harvested it all themselves, but the weather here doesn't allow for that most years.
