OK, I'll try a civil response once again: I was wrong about feeding silage to cows. I've admitted that on here before. I incorrectly extrapolated my very bad experience of bred cows grazing standing corn when in fact silage the way I did it is very different from them grazing standing 200 bu corn. Jim edit to add summary for anyone new to the topic: my experience is that carefully controlled grazing of mature, high yielding, standing unharvested corn over the winter IS a great way to finish steers and grow out open yearling heifers. Grazing of standing corn is NOT a good way to feed P2 and 3 bred cows over the winter. Has to do with the differences I tried to explain in reply to Clicker above, feeding silage to cows is different.
