So to the OP, do what you feel is right for your operation. I would think long and hard about what kind of capital I would be willing to invest into a record high market product.
... Great post, poverty! One thing about cattle is that it IS possible to start, if slowly, WITHOUT a lot of capital. Livestock have traditionally been the way folks with not a lot of capital but willing to work have got a start in agriculture. I think the OP, with family nearby, can get a start in cattle if that is where his passion is. Passion is a key word in life. If your passion is corn you should stick with it. Maybe adapt to different market and techniques/technology, but stick with doing what you love. If your passion is cattle, same thing. Stick with it, but be open to adapting to changing markets and techniques. You are much more likely (but unfortunately not guaranteed) to be happy and successful if you stick with your passion - but still remain open to change. jmho. Jim |
