NE Iowa | There was no were near 5700 cow days in that 100' bag. 35# of silage would not feed a cow for a day. The 36# of hay figure you use is correct. But hay is 15% moisture and the silage is 65% moisture. To dry matter 36.6# of hay would be equivalent to around 89# of silage. At that rate there was only about $220 cow days of feed in a 9'x100' bag. I've tried the silage thing a couple times over the years and found it not to be worth it. Just my opinion, but I find it strange that Jim feeds bagged corn silage to his cows but makes his steers that he is trying to fatten harvest their own corn by grazing. Paying $40 an acre to combine corn is out of the question but paying $200 per acre to chop corn is cheap? Just a thought Jim, harvest all your corn as bagged earlage and feed it to the steers and graze the cows on the stalks? Earlage is about a perfect complete feed for finishing cattle. Slip the cows a bucket or tow if it is really cold? | |
