I have no answers. But it would be easy to blame crop insurance. Then again farm size has gotten so big that the old adage ,”I only want what’s next to me”, sure takes in a large area. Wind mills and solar panels drive up prices, if you have money to spend and have zero emotional feelings for fertile crop land. Maybe all of these baby boomers are rich, and decided to invest in land. Isn’t the majority of land still purchased by farmers? Non farming speculators who buy land are just like the funds in the grain markets. They don’t set the price , but they push a trend too far , or don’t allow anything to sell too cheap. Speaking of cheap , low low interest rates pushed land values up. Maybe the smart money is showing us that hard assets like land is a smart investment.Just consider this idle ramblings of a mad man. You have a valid question, but much like a big puzzle it has many many pieces.
