| The common factor "appears" to be a sanitary issue in these countries. However, if that were 100% true then I would think places like Haiti would be a point source, as well?
Now a more personal observation through second hand experience:
My son spent a summer studying in Shanghai during his undergrad.
His thoughts are everything is dirty. Food dropped on the dirty floor goes back on the plate. Little kids are encouraged to pee/pooh in the waste basket on the street or just go on the sidewalk. Nobody washes their hands. Toilets are gross. Air is dirty. People on top of each other with no real escape.
Note: Shanghai is as close to a western city in mainland China you will find. Beijing is almost like a different country.
He said you could ride the high speed rails from one city to another for hours and never see countryside.
Even though he appreciated the opportunity and saw some interesting and memorable things. He says he would never go back because of how dirty everything is.
