Those sensors that tell you "oil change required" are just a tally counter of crankshaft revolutions.

Not really a revolutionary idea, but it is a better correlation than miles driven or hours of run time.

If you think about a mechanical tachometer like was used on a lot of older tractors was just a tally counter for crankshaft revolutions.  If you do the math on a 4020 100 hrs at 2100rpm works out to 12.6 million revolutions.  If the tractor idled it would rack up hours slower than if it was run at rated rpm and would rack up the hours faster if run above rated rpm.

Most newer equipment has started recommending 200, 300, 500+ hour intervals.  Some or the increase is due in part to the digital tachs rack up hours faster (most mechanical tach engines do not spend all of their time at rated rpm) and the fact that manufacturing improvements result in more consistent precise parts that have less blow by and improvements in oil additives.  If you take a 300 hr interval on a vehicle that has an average speed of 35mph that works out to 10,500 miles, for and average of 2000 revolutions per mile that works out to 21 million revolutions.

FWIW most of the newer oil life monitors are monitoring engine load and adjusting remaining oil life based on duty cycle, temp, run time, and revolutions not just revolutions.

Edit to add:
I reset them in trucks all the time that show up with 1,000 miles or less on the oil. They rarely leave the job, get very little miles, but idle all day.

Idling if typically harder on a engine than running at operating speed especially if not run at high idle and left on low idle.  Perhaps the computer is smart enough to realize that hundreds of low idle hours have used up the useful life of the oil even though only 1000 miles have been racked up.
