You're right. Oil changes are done for recreation over here. I've been changing oil for monetary gain for 18 years now. I've been up management's butt to extend intervals. For years we used Rotella T3, but recently switched to CAT DEO-ULS, made by Exxon. Most of our oil changes are at 250 hours and 5,000 miles. The Exxon people told us we could go to 1,000 hours and 30,000 miles with their oil. Management is still in the 80s on this.

We just got 3 used 2016 trucks with Paccar MX-13 engines. My boss was going to set them up for 5,000 miles. When I showed him the manufacturers recommendation he about fell over. He set them up for 7,500, just 10% of normal life. Also here's an oil sample with 955 hours on the CAT oil. The numbers are comparatively good than 357 hours on Rotella.

I change the oil in my trucks at 10,000 miles. Takes 5 or 6 years to get that many. 320,000 and counting on 1 of them.
