Check out Matt Risinger on YouTube. He is a home builder in Texas and covers a lot of ideas for building a home. One thing he is big on is a good overhang on the roof.

I like LP lap siding myself, though I'm sure there are probably better options available. With a little know how it isn't hard to put up. I put regular steel on my roof a few years ago. Hail takes out shingle roofs here on a regular basis. Had a friend who is a carpenter replace his shingles twice in three years because of hail. With a good quality steel roof you will save on insurance rates. With the colors available I don't really notice steel roofs here, but maybe because they have become very common.

I would go with a heat pump system for heat. I think a well system is best, but we had a neighbor who put the loop in a deep trench. Propane supplier said they used less than 500 gallons of propane in two years, and that was on an old farm house.
