Madison Co. Virginia
Went on a similar trip 11 years ago. drove quite directly to Kansas, Looped out through Colorado, Arizona, California, Oregon, Yellowstone, North Dakota, Iowa, then home.

The Hoh rainforest in Washington state is definitely a worthwhile day hike. We hiked that exactly one week after hiking down the Bright Angel trail in the Grand Canyon, and the contrast was striking!

If you're in the Great Sand Dunes area of Colorado, there's an awesome alligator park near there. You can feed and handle some of them.

Hit the Pacific ocean several times up the coastline. That's definitely worth it.

If you're in the black hills area, look for a Black Hills maze. A several hour exercise in frustration, but fun anyway.

If you're looking for a place to stay in Colorado Springs, the May Family campground is excellent. They have logging trails way up in the mountains that are an excellent way to see what Colorado scenery is like away from the developed sites.

We took one month for the above trip. It was too rushed.

What stands out the most about the trip was getting out of the vehicle and doing something outdoors, like a hike. Riding in a vehicle is a pretty poor way of seeing the countryside.
