Nw Iowa | +1, ag has been used many times in the past as a pawn. Jimmy Carter’s embargo, Reagan raising interest rates trying to stop inflation, on and on. Weather, floods, droughts, and other things will probably affect you much more and you can’t control them neither. We are 2-3% of the population. I respect the fact that trump is trying to finish what he started without giving in to political demands. Sure don’t agree with him on everything but he is determined to see it to a finish. Their is a lot more to China thing than just soybeans.
If you don’t like this try running another ag based business or any business for that matter where you are out maybe 6 months or a year trying to predict what is going to happen. As farmers I sometimes hear that we want all this assurance and insurance and than can’t figure out why our product gets cheaper and cheaper. It allows people to take more risk to grow more because they have price and insurance guarantees. Federal crop allows the bigger to keep getting bigger because they don’t have the risk. Think about it , without federal crop insurance who could handle a crop disaster better? A smaller farmer who is diversified with some livestock and maybe some off farm income or a mega producer who was only trying to make a little money per acre on a lot of acres.
The 1.60 last year should be used over two crop years. We had chance to sell 70% or federal crop guarantee at over 10.00 so that should leave almost 1.20 to use on this years crop. Even just figure 1/2 or .80 to use this year. That still gets us over 10.00. The mistake Trump made was promising the whole 1.60 for one crop year. Should have made it over 2 crop years but than if China got settled timely we would never have seen 2nd half.
I realize basis hit some of you hard this year so above doesn’t apply to everybody but realize with carry out we have that basis is wider than normal all over the country and has been since last fall.
