Maybe we need to think of it by a different measure also when we talk of farm size. We tend to think of the land base of the farmer. Maybe a more realistic approach is to think of acres per person/family supported.

There are often many families making their living off of these large farms even if they are only employees. I suspect that number would be more realistic of the actual changes in the profitability of a land base. The business style of the farm has changed a lot. Years ago most of the farms were limited to the size of farm that the farmer himself can work. Now there are often many families working on and drawing their living off of one farm even if only one person actually owns it.
