I know of a mennonite family that does very well providing income for two households on about 10 acres of mixed vegetables. Several heated greenhouses, a good customer base in Charlottesville, and a bunch of hard work makes it worthwhile. Their physical workload is more similar to a 1940's farmer than it is to the typical pudgy row-crop farmer of today. No, you won't make a living on a few acres and be comfortable all day. Either operate a lot of land, or pull weeds and haul broccoli by hand. |
