It all boils down to what people include as "necessities".
I doubt that many here could go without the modern amenities, like they did back in the years you listed. Once a person gets a taste of sugar, it's harder to eat corn flakes without it, even though the corn flakes are nutritionally fine by them selves. The sugar is not necessary, but it is an additional expense.

edit: No, I don't think a person could raise a family on 100 acres today, raising corn and beans. Even if the land was given to him free. I have no idea what it would be if raising veggies an such.
