Is there a reason the old owners installed a main line P trap?
It was quick and easy.
But wouldn't it back up into sinks and toilets if that main trap wasn't there?
Better to be contained in the system backing up into the sink or shower drain, than spilling into the basement.
If you don't go to the basement every day, you could be in for a surprise.
