It sounds more like a sewer venting problem than a wash machine problem. Do you have a dry trap possibly? We have a trap in the basement that will evaporate out and let sewer gas in. Check you vent above the trap the washer drains into and make sure it's not plugged. Frost will sometimes plug them.
