East Central NE
We use an N rate calculator from UNL. You can set it up with different yield goals for different farms. Most other N-rate generators don’t include Nebraska in the configurations. Have tried to run recs through MRTN but seem to not match what we actually do. A lot goes into ours ie, organic matters, CECs, dry recs, phos levels, micros....etc. it basically comes down to the law of minimums, what will be your limiting factor on final yield. Nitrogen isn’t a cure all. It is actually the most expensive way to give you comfort that crop will preform. In my opinion, the biggest mistake farmers make is not figuring past years nitrogen/yield ratios and charting them from year to year. Most of ours ran in a .74-.65 area this year. Those numbers have been improving but haven’t increased N rates much. Has came from increase in yields and I give credit to applying more micros. Nitrogen is only fuel for higher yield but everything else has to be in order and timing has to be right.
