Depends on who you talk to. You definitely need a DOT # to cross state lines, but even with that you're not supposed to go more than 150 miles on farm tags. You'd probably be okay unless you got stopped by a real jerk.
I wish these regs were a little more straightforward. Even if you're trying to do right, it's tough to figure out what you're supposed to do. No two DOT troopers will tell you the same thing it seems.
