Most Coops should actually only be a short term situation.
There is a problem that is too big for individuals to deal with- a coop is formed that benefits everyone. Its fine if it costs them some to be part of it. Most good co-ops are not formed to be a money maker for members. Its a way for member to be able to make more with their own businesses.
Once other competition for the market moves in - co-ops need to be sold if they become just another business trying to compete for market share.
We do have one here that I hope never gets sold. All members are willing to pay more for their services just to keep the big guys out. Its our local electric co-op. I don't care if I never see a dime off them. Fees are reasonable and their big picture mindset makes their service very satisfying. They treat us very well and I am willing to pay for it.
