One of our local coops did cash out my dad's retained earnings probably 10 or 15 years before he died. So some coop's do actually return retained earnings eventually. I think their reasoning is if the coop is doing well enough where it can afford it, they try to cash out retained earnings around retirement age or a few years later. Of course if they don't have it to spare, not going to get it.
