| ahay,
we are doing the same thing now, im just getting an adjuster out to have it appraised and buying the silage for the value of corn in it. i have a good friend that was chopping southeast of here saying 4 foot tall corn with no ears was doing 5-6 tons, ours is at least 6 foot tall with decent ears on it, its just turning fast with the 100 degrees. i think our way is fair because this week it could be appraised at 40 and next week the ears kernals may have all shrunk to zero. another poster said something about nutrient removal and removal rates being less, i was looking at a chart the other day and it was something like 30-40 lbs of p and 80 lbs of k removed from 40 bushel corn silage. ill try and dig that up.
i would try and get that same field rented and plant a blend of oats/rye/triticale/turnips behind it this fall and rent to graze it, that makes some great "quick" green feed and it keeps the ground from blowing. | |
