SESD | I would keep your eye open for an ad for a dispersion of the type of cattle you like. I'm partial to herford/angus F-1 baldies. You can go to the farm and walk right out in the herd, meet the owner and hopefully just hand pick the ones you want for what you are looking for. I wouldn't be worried about starting out with some good solid mouth cows to avoid the frustrations with heifers, especially since you don't mention any experience. My first pick would be for disposition to save some headache. Can't give any advice on when to buy. Record high right now. I passed on some pasture as I would have had to buy the cows to fill it, and didn't want the risk of the record price right now. If you have the cash and found the right cows, I would probably just do it. Calf off the cow could make over half your money back this fall. | |
