Do what you want, but I think 3000 miles is unnecessary. I had a 5.0 ford that I changed the oil every 10,000 miles on it. Engine had 100k on it when I got it and had 300k on it when I got rid of it. Just used cheap 10w30 Quaker state, not fancy synthetic. Engine always used about 2 qt in those 10,000 miles between oil changes. Never saw any negative effects.
