Subject: RE: oil change intervals on cars

The newer engine run a lot cleaner than the older engines with less blowby and overfueling in cold weather. I honestly believe that oil change intervals can be stretched to 5-6k miles with no adverse affects to your engine.
I do not believe that intervals can and should be up to 10-12k miles like GM's oil change light system does. This can be supported by the timing chain issues on the 3.6 engine linked to dirty oil and the subsequent recall to reprogram the oil life monitor to a 7500 mile limit.
Oil gets dirty and contaminated by levels of unburnt fuel, condensation and fine particulate matter that a filter will not catch. I can tell when I drain an engines oil that has a long service interval by the way it stains my hand.
Engines, oil and filters are better than in years gone by.
Oil and filter are also still cheaper than buying hard parts.
