Subject: Re: Ideas that Didn't Work

Back in the late 80's early 90's or so, the local JD dealer had taken in a CaseIH 1494 2wd cab tractor. We need another utility tractor for mowing/module builder. That was the second, and last red piece, besides tillage eq, to make its way on this farm. It occupied space here for about 3 years. It came here with 350 or so hrs, left with about 700. Sold to Dewitt Auction in nice condition. Rode like a tank, handled like a brick, 3pt function was useless. Would show you how bright sparks from a 3pt ditcher or shredder could be at night. The 3 pt would just drop to the ground and not lift until it was ready. The a/c was almost nonexistant, and had three shifts. When in doubt you could always find another gear. A two stick 15 spd mack with a winch body had nothing on this thing when it came to shifting. Yes, it stayed broke. The only redeeming quality was the flip open roof hatch to vent it when you had to leave in in the sun. I still think I am suffering from mental issues from having operated this turd.

It also broke between the shed and Dewitt's lowboy before it could get loaded. The other red was a 1973 IH 966 with a 2 post canopy. Probably a good tractor, but was not the answer in stump ground and required a pair of earmuffs, especially in road gear from transmission whine. Traded on a JD 4430 quad cab/air after 65 hours.

One thing however on the 1494, no one wanted to borrow it more than once, as it gained a reputation quickly in the neighborhood.
