Subject: RE: Don't forget Dow/Micogen

Outdoor Dave - 12/11/2009 09:02

Dow has the new DHT (Dow Herbicide Trait) coming out in 2011. 2, 4-d resistant soybeans will provide a cheap way to kill some RUP resistant weeds.

Pioneer has never brought out a trait. (Herculex was a Dow product and Y series beans are a marketing ploy to cover the fact that they were 7 years late to the marker assisted breeding table.) I always want to laugh at their technology that yields slogan. Good germplasm research, no trait work. GAT delayed again.....probably never come out at Monsanto is predicted to have refuge in the bag by 2011.

I am waiting to see who comes out with trait to replace RR tech as weeds become resistant. I don't see Liberty Link doing it based on cost and somewhat ineffective results (Liberty has to have just the right conditions to work.)

Conversely Dekalb and Asgrow have never brought out a trait or germplasm. It's only by acquisition that Monsanto has been able to take both sides of the market. Pioneer has never been a trait provider. Neither has Garst, Agrigold etc. GAT was developed by Verdia, the same company that cloned the first sheep "Dolly".

Whether or not Pioneer is/was/are doing marker assisted breeding there beans are doing well here. If the marker assisted breeding is so good and Monsanto has been doing it for so long why did they allow all the RR2 beans to be released with dismal White Mold scores?

Pioneer could have refuge in bag also but they don't have the paid lobby that Monsanto does in Washington. The CRW beetles have been tested for 18 generations for resistance to the protein and no resistance has been found. Why would Dow be against it? They are ahead of them in refuge in a bag. It's all politics.
