Texas | IMO tillage is better than chemical for the environment. But the desire to get across everything fast and tillage leads to issues. Deep tillage followed by stuff like ridge till.
It’s insulting to lump in all tillage with the guys running field cultivators and disks shallow for quick shallow passes.
Even in wheat I can run some duck feet as deep as a tractor will pull the plow and then make a finish pass in front of the drill and catch a 2” fast rain. Where the guy running sweeps shallow 2-3X a year has massive run off. I’ve even planted wheat on small beds contoured to the lay of the land to catch water. The spray guy has definitely wanted to kill me for that before though.
No till may work. But the chemical loading in the atmosphere can’t be good. | |
