Don't bother with insulated siding. If you want exterior insulation it's much easier to go with rigid insulation sheets.

I'm in the middle of reno'ing my house that is very similar to yours by the sounds of it. Old wood frame house with no house wrap when it was built, only 2x4 walls with fibreglass batts, and aluminum siding. We are replacing the sheathing, doors and windows, adding house wrap and air sealing, external R5 insulation, and new siding. I only have 2 walls with the insulation done but it has made a HUGE difference over the old leaky walls! We are also on oil heat so expecting a big payback on energy savings.

If your current siding has a lot of holes in it then it should be replaced, not only for water sealing but also for air movement. You would be surprised how much even just a bit of air movement in your walls will degrade your insulation's effectiveness.
