Leesburg, Ohio | the decision on when to start SS has lots of variables to figure out. I didn't sign up yet (now 67) and plan to wait until 70.
The big deal you need to do for sure is get signed up for medicare, a supplement, and a drug plan. Big penalties for not doing those by age 65, especially the penalties on not having a drug plan. No drug plan, and you pay a penalty for the rest of your life. ( You can be covered by a company plan after 65 and be ok, but I would advise checking with Medicare to be sure.)
I signed up online with no issues at all...took maybe 20 minutes.
My wife could not get the online signup to work at all, and fought with Medicare for months trying to get the signup done correctly. Somehow her account number ended up with some other name on it.
