Don't have to "use it". Just sign up! And, you can stay on employers plan, and not use Medicare, but you should sign up. Otherwise, there are higher rates you will pay when you do use it.
I'm on USPS health insurance if we sign up for medicare ever we are automatically kicked off us USPS insurance. I would check before signing up to make sure the employer insurance will allow that.
