Subject: Got bids for a silage slab

Sunnyside, WA
Pricing a new silage slab for haylage this spring.

Asphalt contractor wants to put 4" of pit run (large rock), the 4" of 1.25" rock, then 3" of asphalt with sealing. Total cost comes to $2.94 per square foot complete.

Concrete would be $90/yard plus tax, 6" thick, 4000 lb (5.5 sack), no rebar, leveling but no rock for base (we have always poured concrete directly on our compacted soil here--low OM). Concrete alone figuring 10% over and 7.9% sales tax would total right at $1.96 per square foot and the contractor wants $1 per square foot to pour. My crew can help the contractor and cut that to $.33 - .50 per square foot.

So concrete and asphalt are the exact same price. My asphalt that is 7 years old is already breaking up in a lot of places. I am leaning towards concrete this time.

Thoughts?
